Kurukshetra War – Day 9: The Peak of Bhishma

Introduction

By the ninth day of the war described in the Mahabharata, Kurukshetra had reached a critical stage. The balance that began to shift on earlier days now moved toward a decisive turning point.

Day 9 stands as the peak of Bhishma’s power—a day where his might was displayed at its fullest, and yet, it also revealed the necessity of change.

The war had reached a point where continuing in the same way would not lead to victory for the Pandavas.

The Battlefield Under Bhishma’s Control

From the very beginning of the day, Bhishma took full command.

  • His attacks were fierce, continuous, and overwhelming.
  • The Pandava army faced severe losses across multiple fronts.
  • His mastery over warfare created near-total control over the battlefield.

The scale of destruction under Bhishma on this day was unmatched in the war so far.

Pandava Struggle Intensifies

Despite their strength, the Pandavas found themselves under immense pressure.

  • Their formations were repeatedly broken.
  • Key warriors were forced into defensive positions.
  • The losses began to rise significantly.

Yudhishthira and the Pandava commanders realized that continuing like this would lead to gradual defeat.

Arjuna’s Continued Restraint

Arjuna, though capable, still did not fully engage Bhishma with complete force.

  • His emotional connection to Bhishma created hesitation.
  • His attacks, though effective elsewhere, were restrained against the grandsire.
  • This limitation allowed Bhishma to continue his dominance.

Guided by Krishna, Arjuna fought bravely—but the decisive confrontation was still missing.

Bhima and the Pandava Resistance

Bhima continued his fierce efforts:

  • He attacked Kaurava forces with intensity.
  • He tried to counter the destruction caused by Bhishma.
  • His presence prevented complete collapse of the Pandava army.

However, even Bhima’s strength was not enough to counter Bhishma’s full-scale assault.

“When you are born with a question in your soul, the answer becomes your life’s work.”

Venkatesham is the founder and guiding spirit behind Bharathiyam — a digital dharmic initiative dedicated to reviving, preserving, and sharing the timeless soul-wisdom of Bharat.

Born into a traditional family rooted in simplicity, reverence, and moral strength, his life bridges two worlds — the outer world of technology and digital communication, and the inner world of silence, reflection, and spiritual seeking.

The articles and essays featured on Bharathiyam are not recent creations, but part of a lifelong body of work that began more than two decades ago. Many of them were originally written between 2000 and 2020, stored quietly as Word documents — reflections, insights, and learnings collected through years of sādhanā, study, and service. These writings are now being published in their original spirit, dated according to when they were first composed.

Alongside Bharathiyam, he continues to nurture two interconnected literary trilogies exploring dharma, family, and the soul’s journey — expressions of the same inner quest that began long ago and continues to unfold through his work and life.
