Long ago, Sage Narada was travelling across the three worlds,
singing the divine name of Narayana.
One day, he arrived at Mount Kailasa and bowed before Lord Shiva.
After offering his respects, Narada said,
“Mahadeva, Shani Dev is approaching.
It is said that none can escape the influence of Time,
KarmaTransliteration: Karma
Meaning / Explanation: Action and its inevitable consequence. Not fate, but the law of cause and effect across lifetimes.
Origin: Sanskrit (from kṛ — “to act”)
Note: Karma includes intention, not just action. More, and Destiny that he represents.”
Lord Shiva smiled.
“I am the Lord of Kailasa. How can Shani’s influence touch me?”
Narada bowed and remained silent.
Curious to test the matter, Lord Shiva decided to withdraw from the world.
He entered the sacred waters of Mother Ganga and immersed himself in deep meditation.
Days passed.
Months passed.
Years passed.
The great Lord remained motionless,
absorbed in profound stillness.
After seven and a half years had gone by,
Shiva emerged from the waters and once again stood upon the banks of the holy river.
There he saw Shani Dev.
With a gentle smile, Shiva said,
“Shani, it appears your influence never reached me.
I remained hidden where you could not find me.”
Shani Dev folded his hands respectfully.
“Prabhu,” he replied, “my purpose was never to find you.”
Shiva looked at him with curiosity.
Shani continued,
“The very fact that you remained in the cold waters of the Ganga for seven and a half years,
detached from the world, was itself the effect of my influence. I did not need to disturb you. Destiny had already placed you exactly where you were meant to be.”
For a moment, silence filled the air.
Then Lord Shiva smiled.
He understood the deeper truth behind Shani’s words.
Shani Dev was not merely a giver of hardship.
He was the guardian of karmaTransliteration: Karma
